The weekend has arrived and the extreme heat that has plagued Spain for weeks seems to be taking a breather for a while. However, there are significant differences between the north and south of the country.
Strong winds are forecast for much of the north of the country. Furthermore, it could rain, albeit lightly, on Saturday in parts of Galicia, the Cantabrian region, the Pyrenees and in the central part of the peninsula. This could come from the influence of a current in the Atlantic. However, they will amount to drops in the ocean in an extremely dry and far too warm April.
Warmer again from Sunday
Spanish weather service AEMET expects temperatures to rise again on Sunday. It will be “a warm day for the season” in the west of the country. Temperatures could reach 32ºC in Badajoz and Seville. Moreover, the mercury will also rise at night, limiting frosts to mountainous areas in the northern half.
Small amounts of rain
AEMET spokesman Rubén del Campo stressed that rain will fall in Galicia, the Cantabrian region and the Pyrenees over the next 10 days. Rain may also fall in other areas of the northern half, but in general it will be small amounts that will be “insufficient” to alleviate the drought in any case.
Cool Saturday
Del Campo indicates that it will be a cool Saturday in large parts of the north and east of the peninsula, such as in Vitoria, where temperatures will not exceed 12 or 13 degrees. In the rest of the country, however, temperatures continue to rise. The mercury could reach 23ºC in Barcelona, 25ºC in Madrid and over 30ºC in Cordoba and Seville.
Strong winds
Strong winds from the west will gradually turn north and east, with northwesterly winds in the Pyrenees, northwesterly winds in the Ebro Valley and northwesterly winds in the Empordà and Menorca. Saturday winds will be strong, with Sunday gradually losing intensity. A strong easterly wind will then blow in the Strait of Gibraltar.
Extreme heat next week
For next week, AEMET expects dry and sunny weather again across most of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands. The Cantabrian region and Galicia may experience low morning clouds.
Del Campo stressed that next week will be warmer than normal, with temperatures between 3 and 6 degrees Celsius above the usual average for the time of year. Temperatures are expected to rise again to well above 30ºC in the Guadalquivir valley on Wednesday. Only in the Mediterranean and the Balearic Islands will temperatures remain average for the season.
