Last weekend, part of Spain finally got some precipitation after a long period of hot weather and drought. However, the extreme hail and downpours appear to be just a glimpse of the unstable weather that´s to come in Spain over the next week.

Although last weekend’s showers, mainly in Catalonia, resulted in considerable hailstorms, the population was relieved that some precipitation finally fell. Still, this was just a taste of unstable weather. The Spanish weather service Aemet predicts a week with lots of rain and varying colder temperatures in large parts of the country from this morning.

Monday starts with rain in northern Spain

On Monday, May 15, rain is already expected along the entire north coast of Spain. And although it could be a quiet day again on Tuesday, that will change on Wednesday, when the south of Spain can experience significant showers. Moreover, these showers will last through Thursday and will be accompanied by thunderstorms.

Colder temperatures are also expected from today. Mainly in the northern and central parts of Spain. At the moment, however, the coast along the Mediterranean Sea and southern Spain are not affected. Here the temperature during the day stays between 20 and 25 degrees.

Friday DANA in southern Spain with downpours and thunder

On Friday, Aemet expects quite a bit of rainfall in the north, south and along the entire Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands. From Wednesday to Thursday a DANA is expected to come ashore via the south of Spain. This DANA will cause considerable downpours and thunderstorms on Friday. The regions of Andalucia, Extremadura and Castile-La Mancha will mainly be affected by this.

In addition to rain and colder temperatures, especially in the north and inland, the Aemet also issues various weather warnings. From Monday morning to Wednesday, the Spanish weather service will issue code yellow on Menorca, the Costa Brava and the coast of Tarragona due to wind and high waves.
