Meryl Streep impressed in Oviedo. Hours after she showed her spontaneity by dancing to the beat of bagpipes – las gaitas – during her official reception in Oviedo for the Princess of Asturias Awards, Meryl Streep experienced another moment to remember.

She did so together with Antonio Banderas, with whom she had a very special encounter in which their great friendship and affection for each other was clearly evident.

Under the title Sin guion, meeting the public, both actors reflected on the impressive career of the American actress, recently awarded Princess of the Arts, in front of a packed Palacio de Congresos in Oviedo.

“I feel like Taylor Swift”

Those in attendance did not stop applauding the idol: ‘I feel like Taylor Swift’ joked Meryl Streep, who won over the Asturians with her likability and charm.

Antonio Banderas, who acted as host, was happy to see his partner and friend again in his homeland, which he has always prided himself on in Hollywood. The Malaga-born actor did not hesitate to greet the Mamma Mia star with a bow and a big smile. But not before giving each other a warm hug and two kisses. A reflection over 30 years of friendship.

The two worked together in 2019, when they both starred in the Netflix film The Laundromat: Dirty Money. ‘She has 21 nominations and I have one. I’m only 20 short,’ Banderas said at the start of the event, showing his great admiration for the actress.

A relaxed and casual chat followed in which Meryl Streep talked about her debut in the film world. She confessed that at first she was not sure if she wanted to be an artist. ‘When I was younger, I thought it was frivolous to be an actress. But as I got older, I understood that it wasn’t just vanity, that there was more behind it,’ she said.

About fame, she said it is still something she fears. “When it comes, it overwhelms you like a tsunami. I should be used to it by now, but I’m not. There are a lot of people who want to be actors because of that but I never wanted that,’ she explained.

Princess of Asturias Award

As for her relationship with awards, Streep stressed the importance of receiving the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts. ‘This award they award me here is very important for the people who received it,’ she said. She added ‘that her contribution cannot be compared to aspects like molecular microbiology, although I understand what many people feel when they go to the cinema or the theatre. I am very happy to be in the company of all the people who have received this award,’ she ended.
