Almost 40% of Spaniards plan to spend more on travel this winter than in the previous season, while 45% estimate to spend the same. This is according to the latest Skyscanner survey with a sample of 2,000 Spanish travellers.

Of those, more than half (57%) say they make at least one trip in winter. One in four (26%) say they would prefer a holiday in the winter months to the traditional summer holiday.

Travelling in winter

The respondents gave several reasons. First of all, the lower costs (67%). The price remains the most important factor to travel in winter. This is followed by the love of winter sports (40%) and finally the search for more pleasant temperatures (29%). In addition, more than half (55%) of Spaniards plan their winter holidays in January or February. This is in line with the current trend of booking at the last minute.

Winter sports favourite

Four out of ten (40%) Spaniards declare that they are fans of snow sports. Almost half (47%) of those surveyed say they spend part of their holiday skiing or snowboarding each year. As winter sports gain popularity, ski travel is becoming more and more accessible to travellers. That’s especially true for those who plan ahead and compare.

But its growing popularity also has some drawbacks, which is why many Spaniards complain about the high price of accommodation near the slopes (46%), queues at the ski lifts (44%), crowded slopes (41%) and the price of ski passes (38%).

Winter city trip

On the other hand, there are the tourists who opt for a city trip. Almost half (49%) of Spaniards say they prefer this in winter. 29% point to the search for warmer temperatures as the main reason.

Young people choose to travel in winter

More than 7 in 10 young Spaniards (73% of 18 to 25-year-olds and 72% of 25 to 34-year-olds) say they choose to travel in winter because it is cheaper than in summer.
