The sun-drenched coast of Fuengirola is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture and delicious cuisine. But there’s another reason why this region should be famous: it has the highest life expectancy in all of Andalucia.

According to recent data from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE), residents of Fuengirola, a popular coastal holiday destination, enjoy the highest life expectancy in the entire autonomous region of Andalucia. The average lifespan of Fuengirola residents is an impressive 82.94 years.

Life expectancy in Fuengirola has steadily increased in recent years. In 2017 it was 82.54 years, the following year it rose to 83.05 years. During the year of the pandemic, it dropped to 83.47 years in 2020 but stabilised at 82.94 years in 2021.

Despite this slight decline, Fuengirola remains the leader in life expectancy in the whole of Andalucia. Other cities on the Costa del Sol that score high in terms of life expectancy are Benalmádena (82.83 years), Rincón de la Victoria (82.53 years), and Torremolinos (82.46 years).

Five years longer for women

A striking difference in life expectancy between men and women is also reflected in the data. Women have an average life expectancy of 85.74 years, while men live an average of 80.36 years.

Málaga ranks third in Spain when it comes to the number of centenarians. Although the average life expectancy of Malaga residents is 81.3 years, INE data shows that 744 Malagueños live to this average age.

Moreover, these data also show that women live longer than men. Of the more than 700 centenarians in Málaga, most are women, with 554 female supercentenarians compared to 262 male.

The entire autonomous region of Andalucia has 2,758 inhabitants aged 100 or older. Seville is the second province in Andalucia, with 631 centenarians, followed by Granada (294), Córdoba (285), Cádiz (263), Almería (202), Jaén (161) and Huelva (178).
