beer record

MALLORCA – A group of 55 Germans on holiday in Mallorca completed a somewhat strange challenge: The beer record! In less than three hours the Germans drank no fewer than 1,254 beer glasses.

This questionable performance leads to remarkable statistics: each participant consumed an average of almost 23 glasses of beer, leading to a bill of more than €2,800. As reported by El Español newspaper, the tourists organised themselves through WhatsApp groups. They didn’t all know each other. But, their goal was to break a previous record set by another group of Germans in July with 1,111 glasses of beer.

Tourism of excesses

This incident, which took place in an establishment on Playa de Palma, has reignited the controversy surrounding the tourism of excesses in Mallorca. The government of the Balearic Islands has been fighting against ‘turismo borrachero’ (drunken tourism) for several years. That is why in 2020 it passed the so-called ‘anti-excesses’ decree, which applies in three key areas: Magaluf and Playa de Palma in Mallorca, and Sant Antoni de Portmany in Ibiza. Nevertheless, this law has recently been labelled “a failure” by the new regional administration.

Furthermore, the broken beer record of the Germans does not contribute to a better image.
