A municipal bus carrying passengers crashed head-on into a wall in Valdemoro, Madrid early on Wednesday. The accident, which occurred at the corner of Luis Planelles and Seseña streets, injured 15 people.
The bus, whose schedule starts at 5.20 am and which makes a round trip between Cercanías station and Avenida de España, was “full of passengers,” according to the municipal spokesman. Most of them were standing.
The accident happened when the driver of the vehicle crashed into a wall for reasons still unknown. According to a municipal spokesperson, the driver became dizzy and lost control of the vehicle.
Injured in bus accident
The two most serious victims are a 62-year-old passenger and the 58-year-old driver.
After the accident, the fire brigade of the municipality of Madrid intervened and had to free the driver. The woman was “mechanically” trapped, according to a spokesperson for Emergencias 112 Comunidad de Madrid. These two injured people were transferred to the hospital 12 de Octubre.
Thirteen other passengers were slightly injured, according to the spokesperson. They were taken to different hospitals in the south of Madrid.
Guardia Civil investigates circumstances of bus accident
The traffic department of the Guardia Civil is conducting an investigation into the circumstances of the accident to clarify and determine if and how the driver lost control of the bus. According to municipal sources, the driver became dizzy and lost control of the vehicle. However, the employee was very experienced and “there was no question of a defect of the bus either”. This is the latest generation of electric buses. It has only been in use for a few months.
