murder of 3 women in Spain

In the second weekend of 2023, three women in Spain were murdered by violence at the hands of a man. Two of them were killed by their partners and the third woman was strangled after having sex. Since 2003, 1,184 women have been killed by their (ex) husband.

Last weekend, the first man was arrested for the murder of a 24-year-old woman. She was stabbed in her home early Saturday morning in Piedrabuena in Ciudad Real. The regional board confirms that it involves the husband of the woman. When emergency services arrived at the scene, they could only confirm her death.

The victim’s family says that the woman and the suspect have a 3-year-old daughter and that they lived together. The suspect himself called the emergency services after he attacked his wife at home.

46-year-old woman murdered in Cadiz

The second victim is a 46-year-old woman in El Puerto de Santa María in Cádiz. She was reportedly shot by her 40-year-old partner. A neighbour alerted police after hearing gunshots. After the raid by the Guardia Civil, the man confessed almost immediately that he had killed ‘his love’. After a house search, the lifeless body of the woman was indeed found with several shots. The man was under the influence of alcohol and drugs during the arrest.

44-year-old Romanian woman murdered in Almería

In Roquetas de Mar (Almería), the Guardia Civil arrested a 30-year-old man from Senegal this weekend for killing a Romanian woman with whom he had a sexual relationship. The man allegedly strangled the woman after having sex. At the moment, this murder is not yet classified as partner violence because the perpetrator and the victim did not have a romantic relationship with each other. Furthermore, the police cannot yet rule out whether the woman was working in prostitution. However, according to the police, it is clear that it concerns sexual violence with a fatal outcome.

Number of deaths from intimate partner violence in Spain continues to rise

The number of women who have been murdered by a (former) partner since 2003, the year in which the Spanish government started keeping the figures, is 1,184, two of which will now be in 2023. Minister Irene Montero of Equality said the fight against gender violence not to strike.

The telephone number 016 is available 24/7 in 52 different languages for all victims of violence. Victims can also tell their story via email 016-online@igualdad.gob.es and WhatsApp 600000016. In emergency situations you can of course call 112.
