The Guardia Civil has arrested a YouTuber with over one million subscribers for manufacturing and demonstrating the creation of illegal explosives.
The operation, named “SPUTNIK,” uncovered a clandestine workshop in Castro Urdiales, Cantabria, where the suspect produced hazardous substances such as thermite, gunpowder, and chloratite. Moreover, his actions posed significant risks to public safety and the environment.
Tutorials viewed over 106 million times
The detained YouTuber, whose videos have amassed over 106 million views, provided detailed tutorials on manufacturing illegal explosives and homemade weapons. In one particularly alarming video, he demonstrated the destruction of a car using 30 kilograms of thermite near a forested area. When firefighters arrived, he reportedly obstructed their access, further heightening the risk of a fire spreading.
Among his other recorded experiments were the construction of flamethrowers and homemade napalm. These activities endangered not only the suspect’s family, who lived on the property, but also nearby residents and the surrounding environment.
The influence of social media on dangerous behaviours
Social media platforms are reshaping society, offering creators opportunities to share knowledge, connect with audiences, and build careers. However, this growing influence comes with risks. The pursuit of followers, likes, and views can drive individuals to engage in increasingly dangerous acts, often with little regard for the consequences.
Incidents like “balconing,” where individuals jump from balconies into swimming pools—sometimes resulting in injury or death—are stark examples of this trend. In their bid to go viral, people may underestimate the risks or ignore the potential harm to themselves and others. The arrested YouTuber’s tutorials, which glorify unsafe and illegal activities, are another manifestation of this troubling phenomenon.
Platforms that reward sensational and extreme content can inadvertently encourage creators to push boundaries in harmful ways. This case underscores the need for both content creators and viewers to approach online trends critically and responsibly.
Seized materials and potential criminal implications
During the operation, the Guardia Civil confiscated over 20 kilograms of chemicals and electronic equipment for analysis. Authorities are concerned about the potential misuse of his content by criminal or terrorist groups. A 2022 arrest of another individual underscores this concern caught manufacturing explosives using the suspect’s tutorials.
A growing threat to public safety
The Guardia Civil’s intervention neutralised a significant threat to public safety, marking the seventh operation against illegal explosives manufacturing this year. The widespread reach of the YouTuber’s channel raised alarms about the accessibility of dangerous information to individuals with malicious intent.
Safeguarding the public and the environment
Beyond the immediate risks posed by the explosives, the suspect’s actions also highlighted broader safety and environmental concerns. Manufacturing and testing explosive devices near residential areas and natural spaces placed entire communities in danger. Consequently, the Guardia Civil’s swift action averted potentially catastrophic outcomes.
Public awareness and vigilance
The Guardia Civil has emphasised the importance of monitoring online content that may pose risks to public safety. They urge citizens to report any suspicious or harmful material to authorities. By taking action against this YouTuber, the Guardia Civil eliminated a direct source of danger and addressed the wider issue of irresponsible content creation with potentially grave consequences.
As social media continues to shape modern behaviour, there is a growing need for platforms, creators, and society as a whole to balance innovation with responsibility. By recognising the impact of online content, authorities and individuals alike can work to prevent the dangers of prioritising clicks over safety.
