Spanish police have arrested a man described as Germany’s most-wanted drug trafficker after tracking him to Málaga following five years on the run. The fugitive, who allegedly headed an organisation importing large quantities of drugs into Germany, was wanted under a European Arrest Warrant for drug trafficking and membership of a criminal organisation. He was also wanted by the Spanish judicial authorities.
The arrest was carried out by the Policía Nacional in collaboration with Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office, the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA). Although officers detained the man in Málaga on 24 August, details of the operation were not made public until Tuesday, 1 September.
The investigation began in 2025 after Spanish police received information suggesting that the fugitive could be in Spain, where he had previously lived. According to the Policía Nacional, the criminal organisation he allegedly led had operated a warehouse in Spain used to load drugs onto lorries, which would then travel through France before reaching Germany.
New identity every three months
Police say the fugitive went to considerable lengths to remain undetected. He allegedly changed his telephone number every two weeks and his identity every three months, creating a substantial challenge for investigators attempting to track his movements.
Authorities also discovered that he had undertaken cybersecurity training in Turkey. Police believe this had given him knowledge of methods that could help him avoid being located through operating systems, electronic devices and social media. He was also described as experienced in boxing and mixed martial arts.
Brother led investigators to Málaga
A breakthrough came when investigators managed to locate the fugitive’s brother. Officers subsequently carried out surveillance and tracking operations across several Spanish provinces as they worked to establish where the wanted man was staying.
The operation eventually led investigators to Málaga, where police spotted the fugitive travelling in the passenger seat of his brother’s vehicle. Officers moved in and arrested him on 24 August, bringing a five-year search to an end.
The Policía Nacional has released footage of the operation showing officers surrounding the vehicle before making the arrest.
Five years on the run
The man had been a fugitive for five years and was regarded by German authorities as their most-wanted suspected drug trafficker. The European Arrest Warrant issued by Germany relates to alleged drug trafficking and organised crime offences.
Following his arrest, he was brought before Spain’s Audiencia Nacional, which deals with European extradition proceedings as well as other serious national and international cases. He has since been remanded in custody while the judicial process continues.
Neither the German nor Spanish authorities have publicly identified the suspect in the information released about the operation.
The Málaga arrest brings to an end an unusually prolonged attempt to evade capture and highlights the cooperation between Spanish and German investigators in tracking international fugitives. After five years, repeated identity changes and extensive precautions designed to conceal his whereabouts, the suspect is now awaiting the next stage of the judicial process in Spain.
