MADRID – The well-known supermarket chain Mercadona will change the opening hours of more than 330 of its supermarkets in Spain from Monday, August 28.

Now that the summer period is coming to an end and many people are returning from their holidays, the chain is closing its summer season in branches located in tourist hotspots throughout Spain.

Summer opening hours

The summer scheme started on June 26 and was initially scheduled to last until Sunday, August 27. During this period, when the population in many areas increased sharply, Spain’s largest supermarket chain not only hired extra staff but also extended its opening hours by half an hour – to 10.00 pm.

This was to meet the customer demand. One of the most obvious reasons for this is the heat. The high temperatures ensure that a large part of the population chooses to go shopping later, for example, to be able to stay a little longer on the beach. In this way, the central hours of the day, which are usually also the hottest, can be avoided.

In addition, with the extended opening hours, the supermarket offers customers the opportunity to avoid the crowds in the high season by choosing to go to the store at other times.

Standard opening hours

However, from Monday 28 August, Mercadona will again use its standard opening hours throughout Spain: continuously from 9.00 am to 9.30 pm.

For customers who want to consult specific opening hours per store, the supermarket chain’s website offers a handy search function for the opening hours of all its 1,627 stores. Customers can also check opening hours on Sundays and public holidays here.
