The Spanish newspapers have been writing about it for days: the marriage of the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida. On Saturday, April 6, the city’s mayor will marry Teresa Urquijo Moreno, a descendant of a noble family.

The wedding on Saturday, April 6, is seen as the wedding of the year. The soon-to-be-married couple can expect high-profile guests. Former King Juan Carlos and the top brass of the political party PP are among those attending the wedding.

Just before his 49th birthday, the mayor of Madrid is leaving his bachelor days behind. According to him, he had almost given up hope of finding a relationship. Almeida is marrying his girlfriend Teresa, who is 22 years younger and belongs to a Spanish noble family.

The wedding ceremony will take place at the Iglesia San Francisco de Borja, in the Salamanca district. Afterwards, the wedding party will move to Teresa’s family estate: Finca el Canto de la Cruz. The bride and groom can expect more than 500 guests. It is not surprising that the wedding is stirring up emotions in Madrid. The mayor, formerly jokingly called ‘Saint Bachelor’, is one of the most popular figures of the PP in the capital.

The bride is less well-known. However, her noble family is well-known. Teresa’s grandmother, a member of the Bourbon family, is a cousin of former King Juan Carlos. The controversial former king of Spain will also attend the wedding. His presence has caused some controversy. After several scandals, the father of the current King Felipe has left the country. He currently resides in the United Arab Emirates.

“Never been so nervous”

Friends and family of the couple are very pleased with the union. The groom himself has admitted that he has “never been so nervous”. The bride is greatly looking forward to her wedding. She will marry in the dress worn by her grandmother and mother as well.
