Summer DANA

MADRID – There is a good chance that it will rain from Sunday in the north of Spain, parts of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. This means that the fourth heatwave of this summer could be approaching the end. And rain falling again in very dry areas for the first time in a long time will be very welcome.

Meteored and Aemet meteorologists agree. After a period of high temperatures in which several heat records were shattered, a major weather change is expected. In addition, there is a chance that a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) will dramatically change the weather picture in the coming days. According to information from eltiempo.es, DANA will hit the Iberian Peninsula on Sunday.

However, what does seem clear is that a trough is approaching the peninsula as of Thursday. This will lead to a drop in temperatures and a greater chance of rain and thunderstorms. First it will start in Galicia, the Cantabrian communities and parts of the Atlantic coast. But, as of Friday, this will spread to the northwest of the peninsula and other regions.

Within a day 10 degrees cooler

Eltiempo.es reports that the expected drop in temperatures from Friday will mainly affect the northern half of the peninsula. Moreover, most notable drops in inland Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country and Navarre. And in extreme cases, temperatures here can drop by up to 10 degrees within a day.

Arrival of a cold front

The weekend will be even more intense in terms of weather changes, with the arrival of a cold front reaching the eastern part of the peninsula. This will lead to a significant drop in temperature and unstable weather with heavy downpours and storms, especially on Sunday and Monday.

The temperature drop will be more general. The maximum temperatures will hardly exceed 30 degrees throughout the country on Sunday. According to the current forecast from eltiempo.es (on August 24 at 3.19 pm) in northern areas they will remain below 20 degrees even in the hottest part of the day.

Sunday most complicated day

On Sunday, which is considered the most complicated day, the rain will be heaviest locally in Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands”. Here’s a weather map of Aemet with how the showers will move over Spain on Sunday.

However, as warned by eltiempo.es, “the uncertainty is very high and it is still unclear whether this DANA will become completely isolated or not”.
