Several beaches in southern Valencia are temporarily off-limits to swimmers after a suspicious substance washed ashore. Authorities think they can link the pollution to a marine spill.

The affected area stretches from Gandia’s breakwater to Piles, covering the beaches of Daimús, Guardamar de la Safor, Bellreguard, Miramar, and Piles. The alert was triggered after local councils spotted small white pellets scattered across the sand. They look like grains of rice, but what they’re made of is still unclear.

Precautionary measure

Until tests confirm the material is safe, authorities ask people not to enter the water. Officials say the measure is purely precautionary to protect public health.

Photos and videos posted by the councils show the pellets spread along large sections of the coast. With the summer season just starting, the discovery has caused understandable concern among locals and visitors.

Councils say they are working closely with environmental and maritime agencies to identify the substance. Tests are already underway to check for potential health or environmental risks.

Possible sources of the spill

Guardamar de la Safor was the first to report the issue. Its local authority quickly issued a warning, stressing the importance of putting safety first. Other nearby councils soon followed suit.

Experts are now investigating possible sources of the spill. These include waste discharged from passing ships or pollution from nearby industrial zones. So far, authorities have not confirmed any official cause. Residents and holidaymakers should keep an eye on official announcements. Furthermore, the swimming ban will stay in place until experts give the all-clear.

The timing is especially difficult for local businesses, which depend on beach tourism. Many are hoping for a quick resolution so the summer season can continue without further disruption.
