A section of Los Pocillos Beach in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote, has been closed to swimmers following the detection of the E. coli bacteria. The area behind the Hotel Jameos Playa has been marked with a red flag by local authorities after health inspections confirmed the presence of Escherichia coli.
The decision to close the beach was made on Tuesday at noon, after samples taken by health officials on Monday tested positive for the bacteria. “As a precaution, due to the elevated levels detected and in accordance with regulations, swimming has been prohibited,” explained the Tías Town Council.
Christopher Notario, the Councillor for Beaches, emphasised that the E. coli contamination was found in a specific corner of the beach, located behind the hotel complex. Health inspectors returned to the site this morning to collect additional samples, with results expected on Wednesday. The Council noted that other areas of the beach were also tested but showed no signs of contamination.
The source of the E. coli bacteria in this part of Los Pocillos Beach remains unknown. However, the Town Council suggests that such contamination typically results from some type of discharge, sewage outfall, or seepage.
Problems with water quality on beach in Calpe, Alicante
On Monday a section of Arenal-Bol Beach in Calp, Alicante, has been closed to swimmers due to a suspected contamination caused by a broken wastewater collector. The collector, which transports treated water from a sewage treatment plant to the sea, appears to have ruptured, leading to the potential risk of polluted water reaching the beach. As a precaution, the beach has been cordoned off, and a sand barrier has been created at the Quisi ravine to prevent further water from entering the sea. Water samples have been taken for analysis. Furthermore, the treated water has been chlorinated to reduce microorganism levels. The Blue Flag has been temporarily removed and will not be reinstated until the water is confirmed safe for bathing.
