The three main beaches of Benidorm—Levante, Poniente, and Mal Pas—have again been honoured with the prestigious Ecoplayas flags. These awards, presented annually by the Asociación Técnica para la Gestión de Residuos, Aseo Urbano y Medio Ambiente (ATREGUS), acknowledge outstanding sustainable environmental management.
The Ecoplayas flags serve as a testament to the exceptional design, maintenance, and environmental quality of Benidorm’s beaches. Councillor Mónica Gómez, responsible for the beaches, stated that this accolade reaffirms the high standards of water quality, sand cleanliness, and services that have solidified Benidorm’s reputation as a premier sun and beach destination in Europe.
Continuous efforts towards excellence
The recognition of Benidorm’s beaches with the Ecoplayas flags highlights the city’s dedication to environmental stewardship and superior tourism services. In addition to this honour, Benidorm has received multiple quality awards, reflecting its commitment to cleanliness, safety, and service excellence.
Preparations for the upcoming season
In anticipation of the forthcoming summer season, intensive cleaning operations have been conducted on the beaches to ensure optimal conditions for both residents and visitors. This process involved the removal of beach furniture, such as sun loungers and umbrellas, to facilitate thorough sand screening and turnover. Consequently, this method promotes natural disinfection through sun exposure and helps maintain the beaches’ pristine condition.
Councillor Gómez emphasised that Benidorm distinguishes itself as one of the few Spanish cities that maintains comprehensive beach services—including cleaning, lifeguards, and accessibility features—throughout the entire year.
European Green pioneer of smart tourism 2025
Further enhancing its environmental credentials, Benidorm has been awarded the title ‘European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism 2025‘ by the European Commission. This accolade recognises the city’s innovative projects that engage local communities and address challenges such as tourism seasonality, aiming to enhance visitor experiences and promote sustainable travel practices.
Mayor Toni Pérez expressed pride in this achievement, noting that it validates Benidorm’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and serves as a model for other cities worldwide.
