Benidorm English Zone arrests

Benidorm’s best-known nightlife district is facing renewed scrutiny after a major police operation led to 80 arrests in the area widely known as the “English Zone”.

Benidorm´s English Zone arrests form part of a wider investigation into alleged drug trafficking in bars and nightclubs. The case also highlights how Spanish tourist resorts are putting pressure on nightlife venues before the busiest months of the year.

At a glance

  • Where: Benidorm’s “English Zone”, one of the resort’s main nightlife areas.
  • What happened: Police arrested 80 people during raids on bars and nightclubs.
  • What was seized: More than €32,000, suspected drugs, weapons, and communication equipment.
  • Why it matters: The operation comes as Benidorm prepares for a busy summer tourism season.

Nightlife venues targeted over two nights

The police operation focused on several premises in Benidorm’s so-called “zona guiri”, an area strongly associated with British visitors, stag and hen groups, late-night bars and summer entertainment.

According to Cadena SER, officers inspected seven venues over two nights as part of the operation.

Those detained are being investigated for alleged offences linked to drug trafficking and membership of a criminal group.

Cash, suspected drugs and weapons recovered

Officers seized more than €32,000 in cash during the raids.

They also recovered substances believed to include cocaine, ecstasy and marijuana, along with equipment allegedly used to hide drugs.

Other items seized included mobile phones, walkie-talkies and illegal defensive weapons. Investigators believe some suspects used radio systems and coded messages to warn others about police activity nearby.

Venue owners among those under investigation

Several people linked to the nightlife businesses are among the main suspects.

Cadena SER reports that two brothers who own venues in the area are being investigated. Another two brothers, allegedly involved in security and public relations work, are also key figures in the case.

Police suspect the system allowed drug sales to operate within parts of the nightlife circuit while reducing the risk of detection.

Six premises face separate sanction files

The operation did not only lead to criminal investigations.

Six administrative sanction files were also opened. These reportedly relate to issues such as overcrowding, tobacco sales to minors and possible discriminatory admission practices.

That gives the case a wider significance for Benidorm. It is not only about alleged drug activity, but also about how busy nightlife areas are licensed, monitored and controlled.

Benidorm prepares for another intense summer

Benidorm remains one of Spain’s most recognisable destinations for British tourists.

Its nightlife, beaches, hotels and value-for-money image have helped make it a year-round tourism powerhouse. Yet that success also brings pressure on policing, public safety and the town’s reputation.

Large operations of this kind send a clear message before summer. Authorities want tighter control in entertainment zones where thousands of visitors gather every night during peak season.

A resort balancing nightlife and safety

Benidorm’s economy depends heavily on tourism, including its late-night bar and club scene.

However, the town also needs to reassure residents, families and visitors that its busiest areas remain safe and properly regulated. That balance is becoming more important as Spain’s coastal resorts prepare for another high-demand summer.

The investigation has now been passed to the court in Benidorm. According to Cadena SER, those arrested were released after giving statements.

For now, the case shows how policing in Spain’s major tourist zones is becoming more visible as the summer season approaches.
