Storm Bernard brings heavy rain and wind to Spain

Storm ‘Bernard’ is moving into Spain on Sunday. In at least 20 provinces in 11 autonomous communities, alert phase yellow or with significant risk (orange) is in force for wind, heavy rain and waves, according to the forecast of the State Meteorological Office (AEMET). 

The Atlantic squall is moving across the mainland from the southwest. An orange alert will apply in Cadiz and Huelva for wind, which will also pose a significant risk to coastal phenomena. Winds will trigger code yellow for Córdoba, Granada, Jaén, Málaga, Seville, Zaragoza, Mallorca, Ávila, Burgos, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Toledo, Badajoz, Cáceres, Navarra, Álava and Madrid. 

Code yellow is activated in Málaga, Cantabria, Guipuzcoa and Biscay on the peninsula, as well as in Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, La Gomera, El Hierro and Tenerife. Code orange is in force on La Palma. 

Heavy rain 

In Ávila, Salamanca, Badajoz, Cáceres, Huelva and Madrid, yellow warning for rain on Sunday applies. Heavy clouds and rain are forecast on the Atlantic coast, the Strait of Gibraltar and Mediterranean Andalucia. Storms are possible in the central system and western Extremadura and Andalucia.  

Snow 

Snow levels will be around 1,700 metres in the Pyrenees and 2,000 in the rest of the country on Sunday, but a rise is not ruled out. 

Temperature 

Minimum temperatures are likely to rise in the southwestern third of the peninsula. So will maximum temperatures, except in the far eastern northern plateau and Extremadura. Weak frosts are also forecast in the Pyrenees and isolated frosts are not ruled out in the rest of the mountain ranges of the northern half of the country.  

These are the forecasts by region: 

Galicia 

Increasing cloudiness with fog and mist likely in western A Coruña, central Lugo and high inland areas. Precipitation and light showers are not ruled out in parts of the western coast and in the mountains of Ourense. These will spread from south to north and become more widespread and intense. Minimum temperatures with slight changes and maximum temperatures generally rising slightly, especially in the eastern third. Weak southeast wind, changing in the afternoon. 

Asturias 

Cloudy, especially in the western half. In the Cordillera, there is a chance of fog. Minimum temperatures are unchanged and maximum temperatures rising in the western third. Light frost not ruled out on the peaks of the Cordillera. Snow cover at 2,200 metres. Weak south winds, with some moderate intervals in the high areas, changing to variable weak winds at the end of the day. 

Cantabria  

Cloudy, light to moderate rain at the end of the day, mainly in the south. Minimum temperatures with little change and maximum temperatures rising. On the coast, light southeast wind, increasing to moderate easterly in the afternoon. Inland, weak winds from the south, with moderate intervals in mountain areas in the afternoon. 

Basque Country 

Cloudy becoming overcast, with showers and locally moderate showers at the end of the day, more likely inland. Minimum temperatures with no significant changes and slightly rising maximum temperatures. Weak southeast wind, increasing to moderate, with gusts, from midday. 

Castilla y León 

Cloudy, with precipitation in the afternoon and evening, which will spread from south to north, possibly with thunderstorms. Fog and fog banks, especially in the mountains. Minimum temperatures unchanged or falling slightly, and slightly rising maximum temperatures. Wind from the east and southeast, with possibly strong to very strong gusts later in the day. 

Navarre 

Cloudy becoming cloudy, with showers and at the end of the day, especially in the southwest. Minimum temperatures slightly falling in the Ribera and unchanged in the rest; maximum temperatures rising in the north-east and unchanged in the rest. Weak variable winds, tending southeast and becoming moderate, with gusts, from midday. 

Cogesa Expats

La Rioja 

Cloudy, tending to overcast, with light precipitation at the end of the day. Fog banks in the mountains. Minimum temperatures slightly falling and maximum temperatures unchanged or slightly rising. Wind from the east or southeast. 

Aragon 

Cloudy, with rain the end of the day in the Pyrenees and east of Zaragoza, with scattered showers in the rest of the region. Minimum temperatures slightly falling and maximum temperatures unchanged or slightly rising. Light frosts in the Pyrenees. Winds weak and variable in the morning, tending to moderate east and southeast in the afternoon, Strengthening later in the day, with very strong gusts in the upper Ebro, Cinco Villas and at high altitudes of the Pyrenees and Iberian system. 

Catalonia 

Cloudy, with showers here and there. Minimum temperatures slightly falling and maximum temperatures unchanged or slightly rising. Light frost in the Pyrenees. Weak variable winds in the morning, trending south and east, light to moderate. Winds increase later in the day, with very strong southerly gusts at high altitudes in the Pyrenees. 

Extremadura 

Cloudy with persistent precipitation, starting late morning in the south and spreading to the rest of the region, locally heavy and with thunderstorms. Fog banks in the mountains. Minimum temperatures rising and maximum temperatures unchanged. Wind from east to south, with strong to very strong gusts at the end of the day, especially in the east. 

Madrid region 

Medium and high clouds in the morning, Chance of fog. Minimum temperatures with little change and maximum temperatures rising. Wind from the east and southeast increasing in the afternoon to the south with very strong gusts in the Sierra and in unsheltered areas in the rest of the Community. 

Castilla La Mancha 

Rain and showers from noon onwards with locally heavy and persistent precipitation in the west. Morning fog and mist in La Mancha. Minimum temperatures with little change and maximum temperatures rising. Light frost at high altitudes in the Serranía de Cuenca. Winds from the east and southeast, increasing later in the day, with very strong gusts at high altitudes, in western Ciudad Real and possibly in La Mancha. 

Valencian community 

Cloudy intermittently in the morning, with clearings in the south at the end of the day. Precipitation later in the day in the northern half. Temperatures almost unchanged, locally a drop in minimum temperatures. Weak variable winds in the morning, increasing in the afternoon to light to moderate, more intense in high areas of the northern interior. 

Murcia region 

Cloudy, with possible showers, likely in the mountain ranges in the north of the region. Temperatures unchanged or rising slightly. Weak variable winds, increasing to the east. 

Balearic Islands 

Cloudy during the day with a chance of occasional light rain. Daytime temperatures unchanged or rising slightly. Weak variable winds increasing in the afternoon to moderate east and southeast with strong intervals at night and gusts that may exceed 70 km/h on the northern slopes of the Tramuntana mountains. 

Andalucia  

Overcast with showers, heavy rain and stormy in the afternoon. Minimum temperatures rise in the western half; maximum temperatures rise in the eastern half and with little change in the rest. Wind from the east increases to the south, which will be strong with very heavy gusts in the western half. Levante on the Mediterranean coast and the Strait of Gibraltar, becoming westerly in the afternoon with strong intervals. 

Canary Islands 

Cloudy with light showers. Maximum temperatures little changed or slightly to moderately falling and minimum temperatures slightly rising. Weak winds from the northwest, moderate on the easternmost island, with strong intervals on the southwestern and northeastern slopes of the islands with more relief. This includes the high peaks of Tenerife and La Palma at the end of the day.
