Agents from the Policia Nacional, in a coordinated operation with the Guardia Civil and the Tax Agency, have dismantled an international criminal organisation involved in the illegal sale of weight loss pills containing an amphetamine derivative.

The operation resulted in the arrest of 20 individuals who used social media and websites to market these pills under the guise of dietary supplements.

Over 500,000 pills and €200,000 seized

During the investigation, authorities conducted four raids, seizing over 500,000 pills, €200,000 cash, a firearm, and a quantity of narcotics. The investigation began in February when the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices alerted the authorities to the presence of a hazardous amphetamine compound in the weight loss pills, posing serious health risks. Reports from individuals experiencing health problems after consuming these pills prompted further action.

Detailed investigation uncovers criminal network

The investigation allowed law enforcement to gain a comprehensive understanding of the organisation’s operations. The network used social media and websites to contact potential customers, employing false information to hinder police action. The identified leader of the organisation operated from an aesthetic clinic. Moreover, they coordinated with manufacturers in Turkey and organised the acquisition and distribution of the pills.

Large seizure at Madrid airport

As the investigation progressed, police intercepted four suitcases at Madrid-Barajas Airport. These contained over 120 kilograms of cosmetic products, including the illegal weight loss pills. Further complications arose when one of the organisation’s leaders reported a fraud incident involving a debt of €460,000 related to the purchase of cosmetic products. This highlighted internal conflicts within the group.

Operation concludes with multiple raids

The operation concluded with raids in Málaga, Granada, and Madrid, resulting in the seizure of nearly 10 kilograms of narcotics, a luxury vehicle, and the freezing of nine bank accounts. The arrested individuals face charges related to public health, consumer protection, money laundering, fraud, and belonging to a criminal organisation. They have been placed at the disposal of judicial authorities.
