A British fugitive in Barcelona has reportedly disappeared before Spanish police could arrest him, in the latest twist in a wider international investigation into one of Scotland’s most violent organised crime networks.
The man, whose identity has not been officially confirmed, is said to be linked to the Glasgow-based Lyons crime group. Reports in The Scottish Sun say he had been living quietly in Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella district before officers raided an address on March 27, only to find he had already left.
Barcelona trail adds new twist to Spain-led operation
The disappearance matters because Spain has become central to the investigation.
The Guardia Civil has been working with Police Scotland, Europol, and Eurojust on a long-running probe into drug trafficking, money laundering, and alleged violent crime. Europol said the network was suspected of moving hundreds of kilograms of cocaine into Scotland, with arrests made in both Spain and the UK during the March operation.
Eurojust said five suspects were arrested in Spain and eight in the UK during the coordinated action day on March 27.
Costa del Sol raids exposed wider criminal structure
The Barcelona lead follows earlier raids on the Costa del Sol, where Spanish investigators say they uncovered part of the network’s Spain-based structure.
El País reported this week that Guardia Civil officers found around 200 images linked to alleged beatings and score-settling during the investigation. The same report said seven people were arrested in Málaga, with the wider Spanish case examining suspected money laundering through companies and crypto-linked financial movements.
The case has drawn particular attention in southern Spain because investigators believe the group used legitimate-looking businesses to mask criminal activity.
Steven Lyons remains central to the case
Steven Lyons, described by Spanish authorities as a key figure in the network, was arrested in Bali in late March after an international alert. He was later transferred to the Netherlands, where Spanish proceedings are expected to continue.
Spanish police have described the Lyons Clan as one of the most violent Scottish criminal organisations of recent decades. STV reported that Guardia Civil carried out 18 raids, mainly on the Costa del Sol and in Barcelona, seizing cash, documents, luxury watches, electronic devices, and cryptocurrency wallets.
Spain remains a key base for UK-linked fugitives
The case highlights a familiar pattern for Spanish police. Spain has long been a base for UK-linked fugitives and organised crime figures, particularly in coastal areas with large international communities.
However, the Lyons investigation appears broader than a simple fugitive hunt. It involves suspected drug trafficking, money laundering, shell companies, and cross-border policing across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
For now, the missing Barcelona suspect adds another unresolved thread to a case already stretching across several countries.
