The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has observed a significant increase in drivers violating speed limits on highways and expressways, correlating with a 21% rise in fatalities on these roads since the start of the year.

Results of the July speed control campaign

Between July 15th and 21st, the Guardia Civil’s Traffic Group implemented an extensive speed surveillance campaign. During this period, 3,679 control points were set up, monitoring a total of 955,804 vehicles. This campaign saw an increase of 122,139 more vehicles checked compared to the previous campaign in April.

Key statistics from the campaign

  • Reported Violations: 52,888 drivers (5.5% of those controlled) were found exceeding the speed limit. This percentage has remained consistent with previous campaigns.
  • Type of Roads: Violations were almost equally distributed between conventional roads and highways/expressways, each accounting for 48.4% of the reported cases (25,572 and 25,604 drivers respectively). Additionally, 1,712 drivers (3.2%) were reported for speeding on crossings.
  • Legal Consequences: Seven drivers faced legal action for exceeding the speed limit by more than 80 km/h, as per article 379.1 of the Penal Code.

Regional and local police contributions

The campaign’s effectiveness was bolstered by the participation of regional and local police forces, who conducted additional checks within their jurisdictions. Furthermore, this collaborative effort aims to reinforce the importance of adhering to speed limits across all road types.

Impact on road safety

The DGT highlights the potential link between increased speeding on highways and the rise in fatal accidents. The organisation stresses the importance of respecting speed limits to enhance road safety and reduce the number of traffic-related deaths.

Conclusion

The recent campaign by the DGT underscores the ongoing issue of speeding and its deadly consequences on highways and expressways. With a significant number of drivers failing to comply with regulations, the DGT calls for heightened awareness and adherence to traffic laws to ensure safer travel for all.
