With all those ads and offers flying at you from all angles, Black Friday can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. But if you know what you’re looking for, it can actually be an excellent opportunity to try something new. Especially when it comes to wine.
Your local supermarket no doubt stocks a pretty good range of wine at decent prices. So why, you may ask, would you need Black Friday to stock up your cellar?
Well, the answer is that most of Spain’s best wines are not found on the supermarket shelves. Those interesting Spanish wines are from lesser-known regions or using more unusual grapes. They usually made by smaller producers who find their way to market through independent shops or specialist online retailers like Simply Spanish Wine.

These are wines that are a little different. They’re made with a touch more craft, and a little more care than industrial wines found in major outlets. They may use local grapes with smaller yields that aren’t suitable for large-scale production. Or they may come from winemakers committed to organic and biodynamic winemaking. As such, they are likely to cost just a little bit more. Which is where Black Friday comes in.
Great discounts are being offered throughout this week. Therefore, now is a perfect time to seek out a higher-value wine that you may not usually think of trying. And to help you find just such a wine, we’ve put together a small selection that will open up new horizons on your wine-tasting journey – all available on Simply Spanish Wine:
El Muelle de Olaso – discount available on Wednesday 22 November
This delicious wine is made with the Palomino Fino grape which is more commonly found in sherries. It has a wonderfully opulent nose with a hint of raisin, pineapple and banana. The wine opens up generously on the palate with notes of white flowers and all the freshness you’d expect of such an established jerezano winemaker. If you’re looking to see a different side to the wines of southern Spain, this is a perfect starting place.
Lagravera Onra Negre – discount available on Thursday 23 November
Made by the Lagravera winery, Onra Negre is a 100% biodynamic wine made from Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep cherry red in colour, the wine bursts with aromas of dark fruit like ripe plums and blood orange coupled with notes of tobacco, menthol, spicy pepper and hints of lavender, thyme and brush. On the palate, it has lively acidity, hints of toasted wood from the wine’s time ageing in the barrel, and black pepper and clove. The tannins are well integrated, with a light touch of bitterness which helps prolong the wine’s finish.
Juan de Alzate Crianza – discount available on Friday 24 November
A prefect Christmas wine, this crianza hails from Bodegas Loli Casado in Rioja. Deep cherry red with some streaks of ruby, the wine exudes delicious aromas of red and black fruit and a faint touch of spice. Plenty of plum, blackberry, cherry and raspberry on the palate, with a touch of cinnamon and polished tannins which help lend the wine a silky-smooth finish.
Ulterior Parcela No 7 y 9 – discount available on Saturday 25 November
This is an intriguing white wine made with the albillo real grape and aged in clay amphoras. Lemon yellow in colour with golden streaks, it’s got a complex and intense nose with lots of mineral aromas, and layers of red apple and aromatic herbs against a background that reminds you of quince. Lively on the palate it has good volume in the mouth, medium acidity and a lingering aftertaste of herbs and apples. Delicious.
Grimau Brut / Grimau Brut Rosat – discount available all week
Or if you fancy a bit of sparkle, why not try a bottle of cava – Spain’s very own champagne? Bodegas Grimau have been making cavas since the 1920s. Based in Penedès – the heart of cava country – their 30-hectare estate is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Merlot, and Chardonnay, as well as the three traditional cava grape varieties of Xarello, Macabeo and Parellada. Grimau Brut is an aromatic cava with a strong fruit presence and well-balanced acidity and sweetness. Whilst the Rosat is a rosé cava brimming with delicious, subtle notes of red fruit like strawberry and raspberry. Whichever you choose you’ll be getting a delicious cava suitable for special occasions or simply cracking open when you fancy something a little different.
These wines will be on sale over the course of Black Friday week on Simply Spanish Wine, the online wine shop for wine lovers in Spain.
