The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has announced the start of the third and final phase of its Christmas traffic operation. Between 3.00 pm on Friday, 3 January, and midnight tomorrow (Monday, 6 January), an estimated four million road journeys are expected across Spain.

This phase marks the conclusion of a nationwide initiative that began on 20 December. Tragically, 44 lives have already been lost in traffic accidents since the operation commenced.

Road safety recommendations

To prevent further tragedies, the DGT has issued a series of recommendations for safe travel during this busy period:

  • Plan your trip: Check road conditions and potential incidents in advance. Updates are available on the DGT website, X (formerly Twitter) (@DGTes and @InformacionDGT), via traffic bulletins on radio and television, and by calling 011.
  • Monitor weather conditions: Prepare for adverse winter weather by equipping your vehicle with essential items, such as snow chains, if necessary.
  • Exercise caution: Be particularly vigilant on short or night journeys, even if the roads are familiar.
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs: Do not consume alcohol or drugs before driving.
  • Use seat belts and child restraints: Ensure all passengers are properly secured. Over 100 fatalities each year are linked to a failure to use these safety devices.

Weather forecast

According to AEMET, Spain’s meteorological agency, a change in weather conditions is expected during the holiday weekend. Rainfall is predicted in the north and west, with heavy rain likely in Galicia and around the Central area on 5 and 6 January. Temperatures will rise, reducing frost across much of the country.

Adverse weather can significantly impact traffic flow. The DGT provides a dedicated section on its website with advice for driving in challenging conditions, including rain, fog, ice, wind, and snow.

Staying safe on the roads

With millions of journeys expected and potential weather disruptions, the DGT’s campaign underscores the importance of road safety during this peak travel period. By following these guidelines and staying informed, drivers can help reduce risks and ensure a safer journey for all road users.

The DGT reminds all drivers that responsible behaviour behind the wheel saves lives and contributes to a safer holiday season for everyone.
