The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has launched its annual Christmas road safety and traffic management campaign. This year’s initiative begins at 3.00 pm today (Friday, 20 December), and concludes at midnight on Monday, 6 January 2025.
The operation is designed to handle the anticipated 20.1 million road journeys during the holiday period.
Phased traffic management plan
The campaign is divided into three distinct phases, aligned with the main festive dates:
- Christmas phase (20–25 December)
An estimated 6.7 million journeys are expected during this initial period. - New year phase (27 December–1 January)
This phase accounts for a significant proportion of travel as families and friends gather to ring in the new year. - Epiphany phase (3–6 January)
The final phase coincides with the Feast of the Three Kings, marking the end of Spain’s festive celebrations.
Key travel destinations
The DGT anticipates a high volume of both long- and short-distance journeys. Popular destinations include:
- Second homes
- Mountain resorts for winter sports
- Tourist and Christmas-themed attractions
- Shopping centres
Measures to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow
The DGT’s comprehensive strategy includes regulation, monitoring, and emergency support to ensure road safety. Measures include:
- Reversible and additional lanes: High-traffic areas will feature temporary lanes to ease congestion.
- Suspension of roadworks: Construction projects will pause to improve traffic flow.
- Restrictions on heavy vehicles: Specific limitations will apply to lorry movements on certain routes, dates, and times.
- Weather preparedness: Special attention will be given to roads affected by adverse weather such as snow, ice, fog, rain, and wind.
Enhanced monitoring and support
The DGT will deploy its full range of resources:
- Human resources: Traffic officers, control centre staff, and helicopter patrols will ensure effective management.
- Technology: Fixed and mobile speed cameras, drones, and unmarked vehicles will monitor compliance with traffic regulations.
- Real-time updates: Drivers can access live updates via the DGT website, social media (@DGTes and @InformacionDGT), and the helpline (011).
Safety campaign: “Drive like you’re carrying Christmas dinner”
This year’s awareness campaign encourages drivers to adopt the same care and attention on the road as they would while transporting the main dish for their Christmas meal.
Key reminders include:
- Avoid alcohol: Combining drinking and driving poses a significant risk.
- Be cautious: Exercise extra care during short, night-time trips, which are common during the holidays.
- Monitor weather conditions: Sudden changes in weather can impact road safety.
Speed and alcohol checks
To reduce accidents, the DGT will intensify speed and alcohol checks during this period. These measures aim to minimise the risk of road incidents and promote responsible behaviour.
