The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has launched an online system allowing transport companies to check the validity of their professional drivers’ licences.
The new service ensures compliance with legal requirements while maintaining road safety.
A simple and secure system
The system confirms whether a driver’s licence is valid but does not provide any personal or professional data. This measure aligns with the transitional provision five of the Traffic Law and responds to a long-standing request from the transport sector.
The online service is accessible, free of charge, and available through the DGT’s Electronic Headquarters. Transport companies with professional drivers can now verify licence status quickly and efficiently.
Ensuring compliance and road safety
With this new tool, companies can confirm that all professional drivers meet legal requirements. This verification helps prevent unlicensed driving, reducing risks on the roads and avoiding penalties for non-compliance.
Employers can check if a driver’s licence is valid, ensuring regulatory adherence. However, the system does not disclose additional personal information about the driver.
Requirements for accessing the service
To use the system, certain conditions must be met:
- The request must be made by the company’s authorised representative.
- The company must be registered as a transport business.
- The driver must be employed by the company and registered in the Social Security system under categories E or F.
If the responsible person does not conduct the check personally, they can authorise a representative through the Registry of Authorisations.
Technical requirements for use
To access the system, the following digital identification methods are required:
- Digital certificate
- Electronic National Identity Document (DNIe)
- Cl@ve credentials
Additionally, the user must enter the driver’s NIF or NIE to complete the verification.
Online access and process
The verification process is straightforward and fully online. Companies must:
- Access the DGT portal.
- Select the “Professional Driver Licence Check” option.
- Enter the driver’s NIF or NIE.
- Receive confirmation of licence validity.
If the system cannot verify a driver’s professional classification, it will prompt the user to contact Social Security for clarification.
In cases where verification is unsuccessful, possible reasons include:
- The company is not registered as a transport business.
- The user is not an authorised company representative.
- The driver is not officially registered as a professional driver.
Mandatory online use
This service is available exclusively online. Companies and legal entities must conduct all related procedures through the internet. The DGT emphasises the importance of digital access for ensuring compliance and streamlining administrative processes in the transport sector.
