A total of 72 people lost their lives in traffic accidents across Spain in February, according to the latest report from the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT).
This figure is 2 fewer than in February 2024, despite a 3% increase in road mobility compared to the same month last year.
Fewer fatalities on conventional roads
The majority of traffic fatalities occurred on conventional roads. However, there was a slight decline, with 2 fewer deaths recorded compared to February 2024. Meanwhile, the number of fatalities on motorways and dual carriageways remained unchanged.
Increase in pedestrian fatalities
The report highlights a rise in pedestrian fatalities, with 9 pedestrians losing their lives in February. This represents an increase of 3 compared to the same month in 2024. Of these deaths, 6 occurred on motorways or dual carriageways, while 3 took place on conventional roads.
Reduction in car occupant fatalities
One of the most notable decreases was among car occupants. The number of deaths in this category fell to 35, five fewer than in February last year. In terms of accident types, fatalities caused by vehicles running off the road dropped to 28, a decrease of five compared to the same month in 2024. Lateral and front-lateral collisions also saw a reduction, with seven fatalities recorded, three fewer than in the previous year.
Failure to use safety measures
A concerning finding in the report is that 18 of the fatalities involved individuals who were not using the required safety equipment at the time of the accident. This includes 15 car occupants, one van driver, one truck driver, and one cyclist.
Weekend traffic accidents
During the final weekend of February, from Friday the 28th to Sunday the 2nd of March, 15 people lost their lives in 11 fatal accidents on interurban roads. Nine fatalities occurred on conventional roads, while 6 were recorded on high-capacity roads. Only one of the victims was a vulnerable road user, a motorcyclist, while 12 fatalities were car occupants.
The weekend accidents included 9 collisions and 5 vehicles running off the road. Fatal accidents took place in multiple locations, including Badía del Vallés, Cercs, Gurb, and Vacarisses in Barcelona; Torreblanca and La Vall d’Uixó in Castellón; Guadix in Granada; Santa María del Páramo in León; O Saviñao in Lugo; Gondomar in Pontevedra; and L’Aldea in Tarragona.
Year-to-date road fatalities
Since the beginning of 2025, road traffic accidents have claimed 169 lives in Spain. This represents an increase of two compared to the same period last year. The DGT continues to urge drivers to follow road safety regulations and use appropriate safety equipment to reduce fatalities.
