Weather in Spain today as heat rises again and storms threaten Teruel

Spain weather today

Temperatures are climbing again across much of Spain today, Monday 8 June, as the country begins another warm week with a mix of heat, local storms and strong winds in parts of the Canary Islands.

The forecast comes only days after Spain’s Ministry of Health confirmed the country had recorded its highest number of May deaths linked to heat since official monitoring began, underlining why early-summer weather is now more than a passing inconvenience.

While most of Spain will see stable skies, AEMET has flagged the possibility of locally strong showers in Teruel and the eastern Pyrenees, alongside sharp regional contrasts in temperature.

Why readers should pay attention today

This is not a day of widespread severe weather across Spain, but it is a day of contrasts.

For many areas, the main issue is heat building again after a warm start to June. In parts of the south and northeast, maximum temperatures are expected to exceed 34C, with the Guadalquivir valley reaching around 37C.

Elsewhere, the change is different. The eastern Cantabrian area and the upper Ebro could see temperatures drop by as much as 10C, showing how uneven the start of the week will feel depending on location.

Heat returns to much of Spain

AEMET expects temperatures to rise in much of the country today, especially in the Balearic Islands, the far south and the eastern third of the Peninsula. The increase will be particularly noticeable in the interior of the Valencian Community and nearby areas, where maximum temperatures could rise by more than six degrees.

The highest values are expected in the usual inland heat zones. Temperatures may exceed 34C in parts of the northeast depressions and lower areas of the southern half of the country, with around 37C possible in the Guadalquivir valley.

That matters after the recent health figures on heat mortality. Even without an official “heatwave” label, high temperatures can affect older people, young children, pregnant women, outdoor workers and those with existing health conditions.

Storm risk in Teruel and the eastern Pyrenees

The most unstable weather is expected later in the day, when cloud development over inland eastern areas could bring showers and storms.

AEMET has highlighted the risk of showers in Teruel and the Pyrenees, with the possibility that they may be locally strong. In Aragón, the agency specifically mentions showers and storms in the Sistema Ibérico of Teruel during the afternoon, with a chance they could be locally strong and accompanied by hail.

This is the kind of localised storm risk that can be easy to underestimate. Conditions may look settled for much of the day, then change quickly in mountain and inland areas during the afternoon.

Drivers, hikers and people planning rural outings in Teruel or the eastern Pyrenees should keep an eye on the latest updates and avoid exposed areas if storms develop.

A cooler change in the north

The north of Spain will not feel the day in the same way as the south and east.

A weak front is expected to bring cloudier skies and some light rain to Galicia and the Cantabrian area, while maximum temperatures will fall in parts of the north and west. The most noticeable drop is expected in the eastern Cantabrian area and the upper Ebro, where temperatures could fall by up to 10C.

That contrast is one of the defining features of today’s forecast. Spain may be warming overall, but local conditions remain highly varied, especially between the Atlantic-influenced north and the inland south and east.

Strong winds in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands also need watching today, though the issue there is wind rather than heat.

AEMET expects moderate trade winds, with very strong gusts possible in exposed areas. RTVE reports that some gusts may exceed 70km/h in parts of the islands.

The north of the islands is also expected to see cloudier conditions, while southern areas should remain clearer. For anyone travelling between islands, driving through exposed zones or spending time near coastal areas, wind may be the main practical factor today.

A warmer-than-normal week ahead

The broader outlook suggests that Spain is heading into another week with temperatures above normal for the time of year in much of the country, especially inland.

AEMET’s weekly outlook for 8 to 14 June points to temperatures above average across much of Spain, particularly in the interior of the Peninsula, with little rain overall. However, the agency also leaves the door open to some storms, especially in eastern parts of the country.

That means the week is likely to feel more like early summer than late spring in many places. It also reinforces the need to take heat seriously before July and August.

Change in weather throughout the day

Anyone in hotter parts of Spain today should avoid unnecessary exertion during the warmest hours, drink water regularly and keep an eye on older relatives, young children and vulnerable neighbours.

Tourists should be particularly careful with walking-heavy plans in cities or inland areas. A day that looks pleasant in the morning can become draining by mid-afternoon, especially when temperatures move into the mid-30s.

In areas with storm risk, especially Teruel and the eastern Pyrenees, outdoor plans should stay flexible. Storms can be local, sudden and intense, even when nearby areas remain dry.

A mixed start to the week

Spain´s weather today is not defined by a single warning. It is defined by contrast: heat rising again in much of the country, storms threatening parts of the east, a cooler change in the north and strong winds in the Canary Islands.

After a record May for heat-related deaths, that matters.
