MADRID – The director of the Spanish traffic service DGT, Pere Navarro, has “deeply regretted” the “confusion” created by some of his words on Thursday saying that “next year, by imposing Brussels, we will levy tolls”.

He also pointed out that his department has neither direct information nor authority to decide on that implementation. “Brussels imposes on us, demands from us, to charge tolls; it tells us that the money they send us is not for road maintenance, but for other things, with which you have to introduce tolls if you want to receive more money”, as a demand if you want to receive more money,” Navarro initially stated.

Transport Minister Raquel Sánchez regrets having to go public and “categorically deny” that the government is considering charging tolls for road use. “The hypocrisy of the PP, which has commissioned surveys to levy tolls, is astounding, and the hypocrisy of PP leaders who privately admit to being in favour of tolls but publicly, now in the campaign, says the opposite.” added the minister.

On this issue of tolls, raised by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the PP, in the debate with President Pedro Sánchez, the Vice-President of the PP, Esteban González Pons, commented on Twitter: “What did Pedro Sánchez say, that it is a lie is that he has agreed to reintroduce motorway tolls? Well, the head of the DGT crime service seems to disagree. The liar is more likely to be caught…”.
