Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), through its Traffic Division of the Guard Civil, is once again partnering with the European Roads Policing Network (ROADPOL) for the annual Road Safety Days project. This initiative aims to raise awareness about road safety across Europe and reduce road fatalities, with a particular goal of achieving zero deaths for at least one day each year.
Focus on preventing road fatalities
So far in 2024, there have been 23 days in Spain without any recorded road traffic fatalities. This encouraging statistic fuels optimism for reaching the campaign’s goal of achieving at least one day with zero road deaths across the European Union. In 2023, Spain achieved this goal on 24 separate days.
Week-long campaign during European mobility week
The campaign, currently running until Sunday, September 22, coincides with European Mobility Week. During this time, traffic enforcement agencies across various European countries will focus on preventive measures, raising awareness about traffic regulations and road safety through information checkpoints and educational activities.
Road accidents remain a major concern in Europe
With an average of 70 road deaths daily across Europe, the need for initiatives like Road Safety Days is clear. By collaborating with road users and authorities, the DGT believes that these numbers can be reduced. The campaign emphasises that road safety is a shared responsibility, whether people travel by car, motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot.
Informational campaign to raise awareness
The Traffic Division of the Guardia Civil will conduct informational checks throughout the week to remind drivers of the importance of adhering to traffic regulations. These actions are part of a larger communication campaign, which also includes educational resources such as a dedicated website and video materials. These aim to inform European citizens about how to reduce risks on the road and enhance their own safety.
By actively participating in the ROADPOL Road Safety Days, Spanish traffic authorities reaffirm their commitment to promoting road safety and reducing fatalities across the country’s roads.
