Spain appeared to be the second favourite destination for German tourists this spring. The Balearic Islands came out top in Spain with a large majority of flights booked for this spring and summer.
Spain overtook Greece as the favourite destination for Germans, also leaving Egypt in its wake. Despite its popularity, Turkey still appears to be slightly more popular with German tourists than Spain, writes the Spanish website Tourinews.es. These conclusions emerge from the outlook report for the second quarter of 2021 prepared by Turespaña.
Germans love package holidays
Germans are fond of package holidays, which often include the flight, accommodation and sometimes food. The report shows 30% of Germans opted for a package holiday to Turkey; but Spain followed closely behind with 28%. Egypt and Greece followed at 17% and 10% respectively.
Balearic Islands popular with Germans
In the first quarter of 2021, Turkey was more popular than Spain. One reason for this is Germany only designatd the Balearic Islands as a safe destination during the first quarter. Between April and October this year, more than 42% of flights from Germany go to Palma de Mallorca.
Spanish beaches and sun are the big draw
The survey conducted by Turespaña shows half the German tourists choose Spain for the sun and wonderful beaches. According to the survey, Spain lags behind when holidaymakers are looking for a “sustainable destination” and “nature and sports opportunities”.
Spain still a favourite among international tourists
Another survey by the travel platform TravelgateX, questioned tourists of all nationalities as to their favourite destination. Their findings ranked Spain among the top favourite holiday destinations for the third consecutive year.
From June to September, hotel bookings through this site place Spain as the number one choice, followed by the United States. Greece also experienced a considerable growth, as evidenced by the number of hotel bookings for this summer. Bookings for Italy, on the other hand, fell significantly.
