More than 8,000 family members of officers of the Guardia Civil and the Policia Nacional have united in the Nuestro corazón por bandera platform. They are demanding that the Spanish government provide more resources and that they be considered a “risky profession”.

What, after the murder of two police on the quay of Barbate (Cádiz), started as a local family movement, is spreading throughout Spain. Officers’ wives, mothers and husbands have joined the Nuestro corazón por bandera platform.

The initiative was born just a week ago in the Campo de Gibraltar region. More than 8,000 family members of the Guardia Civil and the Policia Nacional have now joined.

Murders of Guardia Civil officers in Barbate

Wives of the agents of the GEAS (divers) of the Guardia Civil founded this movement. One of them is the widow of Miguel Ángel Gómez. He was one of two officers killed by a drug boat in Barbate on February 9.

President of the Platform and wife of an agent of the GEAS in Campo de Gibraltar, indicates that what happened in Barbate was “heartbreaking”. The creation of the Nuestro Corazón por bandera platform has generated many reactions throughout Spain.

Cogesa Expats

Thousands of people (women, husbands, unmarried partners, mothers, fathers, children of the Guardia Civil and the Policia Nacional) have contacted the group via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok. But also on WhatsApp, 30 groups have been created in different provinces. They are now in the process of organising and appointing local spokespeople.

Agents’ family members live in fear

“We have enough of that feeling of dread when they go to work because they don’t have enough resources,” Isandra explains. The platform already has delegations in almost all autonomous communities, from Galicia and Asturias to Catalonia, including the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands.

Demand

In their manifesto, they demand that the Campo de Gibraltar be considered as an area with a special individuality. In addition, it is a requirement that officers of the Guardia Civil throughout Spain be provided with proper resources. So that they can “carry out their work in safe conditions”.

Police officers often have inferior resources at their disposal when arresting criminals. The family members emphasise that they do not want to antagonise the Guardia Civil with the platform. On the contrary, many literally have the Guardia Civil in their blood.

Voice of agents

The platform, which has begun the legal procedures to be created as an association, will be the voice of the agents of the Guardia Civil and the Policia Nacional. “They can’t talk themselves because they will be punished. But we do,” said Inmaculada, spokesperson for the group in the Valencian Community. On March 16 there will be a demonstration in Madrid. Nuestro corazón por bandera will demand better working conditions for police and security there.
