The Spanish government has reactivated a decree that rewards regular travellers with a 30% discount. Consequently, it will finance 20% of the transport pass of the metro and the intercity buses of Malaga.

From January 30th, the free Renfe Cercanías bonus will once again be available. The council approved this after last week’s repeal of the bus decree. In Malaga, both the intercity buses and the metro had no difference in the price of their bonds. This was because the law stipulated that the board would handle the 30% bonus provided by the government in order to maintain the 50% discount. In total, these organisations contribute 20% to the discount. The Empresa Municipal de Transportes EMT (Municipal Transport Company) always maintained these discounts.

Free commuter and medium-distance passes

Free commuter and medium-distance passes have been unavailable since January 22nd, 2024. It is important to note that those who had one of these passes before this date can continue using their original pass(es). However, these passes will only be available for 5 months, as the offer expires on June 30th 2025.

Deposits

To get this bonus, a deposit of €10 has to be made. This applies to commuters. Twenty euros have to be deposited for medium-distance travellers. However, these deposits are refunded to users when they have completed a certain number of train journeys in the valid months which are from January 30th to June 30th.

Metro and bus prices

Bus and metro ticket prices have not changed at all in the last few weeks. Any discounts and bonuses for buses and metros will also stay the same for now.

Single commuter ticket

The government has clarified and promised that the single commuter ticket will be available by June 2025. This ticket can be used on all short-distance trains from Cercanías throughout Spain. They have also announced that the price will be €20 a month. However, it will be free for those under 15 years of age, and those between the ages of 15 and 26 only have to pay €10 a month.

Additional guidelines

Public transport will be free for those under 15. Young people can expect a range of special discounts, and rates will be reduced for returning customers.
