First rain, then cold in April: anything but spring this week

rain in April

Rain could return to Spain this week and then it will get cold in April as the month begins. The remnants of the shower that hit the Canary Islands over the weekend are now moving towards the Spanish mainland.

Furthermore, on Tuesday and Wednesday, it will rain almost everywhere in Spain. However, from Thursday, the precipitation will decrease and be replaced by cold. Moreover, in early April, in addition to the rain, it may even snow at low altitudes.

Where does most rain fall?

Almost all of Spain will experience rain at some point. Once again, the precipitation will come from the southwest, with Andalucia and Extremadura the first regions to receive rain on Monday afternoon.

The rain will continue across the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, increasing in strength. Although no heavy rain is expected, the cumulative precipitation could be significant in the mountain areas in central and southern Spain. Furthermore, the precipitation may be accompanied by thunderstorms in Castilla y León, Extremadura, Andalucia, and western Castilla-La Mancha.

Less rainfall expected in these regions

The chance of precipitation is less in Galicia, the Basque Country, Navarre, and the northern half of Aragon. On the Canary Islands, it remains somewhat unstable, showers may fall on Tenerife and La Palma.

On Wednesday, the chance of rain is again high throughout the country. Only in western Extremadura and Castilla y León, and in southern Galicia there is less chance of precipitation. In the Canary Islands, there will be a shower here and there.

On Thursday the precipitation will be less spread over the country, but it can still rain in quite a few areas. On Friday, precipitation will be concentrated in the north, mostly in the form of snow.

The second half of the week will see a return to cold air. It will be humid and very cold, especially in the northern half of the country temperatures will be far below normal in early April. However, values are expected that are typical of cold winter days. With the current forecasts, it cannot be ruled out that there will be significant snowfall at low altitudes in the northern areas during the first half of April. Temperatures will drop and below 1000 metres it may freeze and snow. It cannot be ruled out that the snow level may drop to 500 metres in the north of the country on Friday.
