Much of Spain is swapping storms for sunshine this Sunday as high pressure returns and temperatures begin climbing again. More than 35°C is possible in parts of the country, although strong Levante winds have put Cádiz under weather warnings.
After days of thunderstorms and torrential rain across parts of eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands, Sunday brings a very different picture to much of the country.
AEMET expects high pressure to dominate, with largely clear or lightly clouded skies across Spain. Temperatures are also rising again, particularly across the peninsula’s northern half.
The change follows a turbulent spell of Mediterranean weather that brought intense rain to areas including the Valencian Community, Murcia, Andalucía, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia.
Temperatures could pass 35°C
Temperatures are expected to exceed 35°C in some of the south-western depressions, while AEMET says similar values cannot be ruled out around the Miño.
Warm nights are also lingering. Tropical nights, when temperatures remain at or above 20°C, are expected in parts of the southern Mediterranean and lower Guadalquivir.
Across much of the country, however, Sunday’s weather is straightforward: sunshine, dry conditions and temperatures that feel much more like summer than the approach of autumn.
More cloud may still cover Galicia, the Cantabrian coast, the upper Ebro, Mediterranean areas and parts of the south-east. Some drizzle is possible around the Strait and Melilla, while isolated showers cannot be ruled out along parts of the south-eastern coast.
Strong Levante winds in Cádiz
There is one notable exception to Sunday’s generally settled picture.
AEMET has issued yellow warnings across parts of Cádiz province for strong winds and rough coastal conditions. In the Strait of Gibraltar, Levante gusts could reach 80km/h, while gusts of up to 70km/h are forecast for the Cádiz coast and countryside.
Yellow coastal warnings are also in force for the Cádiz coastline and Strait, where easterly winds could reach force seven.
More late-September heat ahead
Sunday’s sunshine is not expected to be a one-day return to summer.
The settled pattern is forecast to continue into the beginning of the new week, with temperatures climbing further in many areas. More widespread temperatures above 30°C are expected, with 32–34°C possible in parts of Spain as the week progresses.
That means the final days before the astronomical change of season are likely to feel distinctly summery across much of the country.
For anyone making the most of Sunday’s sunshine, conditions will be favourable across most areas. Those in Cádiz and around the Strait should, however, pay attention to AEMET’s wind and coastal warnings, particularly near exposed beaches and coastal areas.
