The Spanish Island of Ibiza is one of the areas hardest hit by the drought. In fact, according to August data, the water reserves on Ibiza are at 32% of their capacity. This means that Ibiza has the lowest figure for the Balearic Islands.
Despite this dire situation, there is an underground aquifer in a garage under an apartment building in Ibiza. This aquifer continues to waste water. According to the Diario de Ibiza, between 200 and 500 tons of water enter the sewer system every day, which eventually ends up in the sea.
Years of problem
And this is not a new situation. Local residents have been complaining about this situation for decades. “We’ve had this problem all our lives and it’s been around since the building was built about four decades ago. In the meantime, a lot of water is being wasted,” complained one of the local residents.
In the town hall of Ibiza, they started almost a year ago with work to solve the problem. But the work has come to a standstill, according to a local resident. He also stated: “I believe that the infrastructure of the reform is complete. In fact, underground pipes have already been installed in our aquifer that connect to the underground reservoirs in the sa Graduada car park. We don’t want all this water to be wasted there, but for now we have to look at it with sadness.”
Response of the City Council
The municipality has reported that they are “in the process of obtaining the corresponding permits”. This is something essential to “install the new barrier and complete the work”.
The municipality told Diario de Ibiza that “they still have to install the dispenser and the new pump system and move the new reservoir. And finish the work on a small part of the pipes. When everything is ready, this high-quality water, which has been wasted and left over for a long time, will be used, among other things, for watering and cleaning the streets”.
