The incident happened shortly after 2.15 pm on Avenida Ramón Gómez de la Serna, near a hotel and a short distance from Marbella’s Palacio de Congresos. Several people called the 112 emergency service after hearing gunshots and seeing people running from the area.
Policía Nacional and Policía Local officers were sent to the scene, together with medical teams. The injured man was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg, although authorities have not released further details about his condition.
Three people have since been arrested in connection with the shooting. Sources close to the investigation have confirmed that all three are Dutch nationals, while Policía Nacional has taken charge of the investigation into what happened and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Police operation follows afternoon shooting
The shooting took place in a busy part of central Marbella, on the avenue running between the town centre and the Golden Mile. The sound of gunfire and sight of people running prompted several emergency calls shortly after 2.15 pm.
Local and national police responded, with the arrests made shortly afterwards. Investigators are now gathering witness accounts and examining available security-camera footage as they attempt to establish the cause of the shooting, the relationship between the victim and those arrested, and whether anyone else was involved.
Residents in the Nagüeles area also reported a substantial police presence later in the afternoon. InSpain.news has received local reports of suspects fleeing towards the area and police activity continuing there, although these details have not yet been officially confirmed and the investigation remains open.
Second Marbella shooting in little more than two weeks
Tuesday’s incident comes just over two weeks after another shooting in Marbella ended with the death of a 33-year-old man.
That attack took place in Calle Pintor Pacheco in the early hours of 24 August. The victim suffered two gunshot wounds to the abdomen and died despite attempts by emergency services to save him.
The latest shooting is therefore the second serious firearms incident in Marbella in little more than a fortnight.
Special police plan active on the Costa del Sol
The latest arrests come while Policía Nacional is operating a special plan on the Costa del Sol aimed at tackling violent incidents involving firearms.
Police have not so far publicly established a motive for Tuesday’s shooting or confirmed whether it is connected to organised crime. There is also no indication at this stage that the latest incident is linked to the fatal shooting on 24 August.
The investigation remains open and further information is expected as officers establish the sequence of events and the circumstances leading to the gunfire.
