A man has been arrested on suspicion of intentional homicide after allegedly driving a car at two people following a fight during a feria in Sevilla province, killing one of them. The 50-year-old victim was struck at around 6.00 am on Saturday in Las Cabezas de San Juan, where the town’s annual Feria de Septiembre is taking place this weekend.
According to the Guardia Civil, the incident began with a disagreement involving three people, which subsequently developed into a fight. Investigators believe one of those involved then got into a vehicle and attempted to run down the other two.
One person managed to avoid the vehicle, but the second was hit and died at the scene. The driver was subsequently arrested and is being investigated on suspicion of homicidio doloso, or intentional homicide.
Emergency services called to scene
Emergency service 112 received an alert at around 6.50 am reporting that a man had been struck by a car on Avenida Federico García Lorca. The caller reported that the vehicle had pushed the victim against a wall in an open area.
Firefighters, Policía Local, Guardia Civil and medical teams were mobilised, although firefighters were later stood down because the victim had already been freed. Health workers found the 50-year-old man in respiratory arrest and were unable to save his life.
The Guardia Civil’s Territorial Judicial Police Team in Lebrija has taken charge of the investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death.
Incident during Las Cabezas September feria
The fatal incident happened while Las Cabezas de San Juan was celebrating its annual Feria de Septiembre, which began on Wednesday 9 September and is due to continue until Sunday 13 September.
Ahead of this year’s feria, the Ayuntamiento approved a dedicated emergency and security plan involving additional Guardia Civil resources, including its cavalry unit and USECIC citizen security unit, alongside reinforced Policía Local coverage. The council had described the measures as part of an expanded operation intended to provide security throughout the five-day celebration.
The Feria de Septiembre is one of the traditional celebrations of the Bajo Guadalquivir area and includes live music, equestrian events and family activities throughout the five days. Saturday night’s scheduled programme includes a performance by Kiko y Shara, with the feria currently due to continue through Sunday.
The investigation into Saturday morning’s death remains ongoing.
