A major search operation is underway in northern Spain after a hiker from Bilbao disappeared in the Cantabria mountains. Cantabria’s regional government has activated level 1 of its mountain and rural search protocol in an effort to find the missing man, who was last known to have been in the Arredondo area on Saturday, 21 March.
The search is focused on the Collados del Asón zone, a well-known hiking area in the east of the region.
What happened to the missing hiker in Cantabria?
Emergency services say the missing man had planned a 22-kilometre circular walking route on Saturday. His vehicle was later found on Sunday morning, helping rescuers narrow the search area. By Sunday afternoon, however, an aerial reconnaissance flight had produced no positive result, prompting a large-scale response on the ground and in the air.
Large-scale rescue operation activated
According to Europa Press, the operation involves around 40 people, 15 vehicles, the medical helicopter of the Cantabria government, and a Guardia Civil helicopter. The regional authorities said the search had moved into a more serious phase with the formal activation of the level 1 protocol.
That makes this more than a routine mountain incident. It is now a full emergency search, with air and ground resources working against the clock in difficult terrain.
Search focused on Collados del Asón
The man is understood to have been walking in the Collados del Asón area near Arredondo, one of Cantabria’s best-known mountain landscapes and a place that regularly attracts hikers. The area is spectacular, but like many mountain environments in northern Spain, it can also be unforgiving when visibility, terrain, or route choices become difficult. That geographical context helps explain the scale of the response now underway.
Why this story matters
Stories like this tend to resonate because they sit at the intersection of outdoor tourism and real risk. Spring is one of the key periods when hiking activity starts to increase across Spain, especially in regions such as Cantabria, Asturias, and the Pyrenees. This case is a reminder that even experienced walkers can quickly find themselves in danger when routes are long and conditions shift.
For now, the priority remains the search itself. Authorities have not yet reported any confirmed sighting or contact with the missing hiker.
Search continues into Sunday evening
As Sunday moves into the evening, the operation remains active. The next few hours are likely to be crucial as crews continue combing the Arredondo area by air and land.
The focus now is on locating the missing man as quickly as possible in terrain that can be both beautiful and brutally challenging.
