Spain is set to experience a noticeable drop in temperatures this week as a cold air mass from the interior of Europe sweeps across the country.
After a brief period of unseasonably warm weather, much of the peninsula will see colder days and frosty nights. However, temperatures are expected to rise again by midweek.
Cold air brings winter back to Spain
Last week brought unusually high temperatures for this time of year, with Águilas, Murcia, recording maximums of 25.8ºC on Thursday. But from Sunday, a northerly airflow will bring colder air from Europe, leading to a significant drop in temperatures, especially in the northeastern regions.
Night-time temperatures will plummet, with frost expected in many areas. Cities like Soria and Teruel could see lows of -5ºC, while Tuesday is forecast to bring even colder conditions, with -7ºC anticipated in Badajoz, Ávila, Ciudad Real, and Albacete. Daytime highs in the northern interior are unlikely to exceed 10ºC.
Warmer conditions in southern regions
While much of Spain braces for a wintry chill, the south and Canary Islands will remain relatively warm. Temperatures in southern regions are expected to range from 17ºC to 20ºC, while the Canary Islands will enjoy highs exceeding 20ºC.
Minimal rainfall expected
Despite the cold front, the air mass remains predominantly dry, meaning precipitation will be limited. Some showers, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms, may occur in the Balearic Islands due to the influence of squall Felix near Italy. The southeast coast of Spain might also see light rainfall driven by easterly winds.
Temperature rebound by midweek
The cold snap is not expected to last long. From Wednesday, temperatures are forecast to rise across most of Spain, bringing milder conditions back to the peninsula.
Outlook for the week
- Sunday to Tuesday: Significant drop in temperatures, with frost and freezing conditions in many areas.
- Monday and Tuesday: Coldest days, with nighttime lows reaching -7ºC in central and northern regions.
- South and Canary Islands: Milder conditions persist, with highs of 17ºC–20ºC in the south and above 20ºC in the Canary Islands.
- Rainfall: Minimal precipitation, with isolated showers in the Balearic Islands and the southeast coast.
- Wednesday onwards: Gradual warming across the country.
This week offers a mix of wintry chill and mild southern sunshine, with warmer days returning by midweek. Whether you’re preparing for frost or basking in southern warmth, Spain’s weather remains as varied as its landscapes.
