A-5 traffic construction works

MADRID – Starting today, January 15, traffic on the A-5 motorway will face significant disruption due to lane reductions as part of the Madrid City Council’s project to bury the A-5. Two of the four lanes in both directions will be closed between kilometres 6,300 and 3,200.

The changes are expected to cause traffic jams on and around the A-5, particularly during rush hours.

Alternative routes proposed

To minimise congestion, the Traffic Department has outlined seven alternative routes for motorists travelling towards Madrid:

  • Exit 46 (Valmojado): Take the CM-41 to the A-42 motorway (Yuncos).
  • Exit 35: Use the R-5 (toll road) to connect with the M-40.
  • Exit 32 (Navalcarnero): Follow the M-600 to Brunete and then the M-501 to Madrid.
  • Exit 31 (Navalcarnero): Use the M-404 to access the A-42 (Torrejón de la Calzada).
  • Exit 25 (Arroyomolinos): Take the M-413 to M-407 (Leganés) and then connect to the M-50.
  • Exit 18: Join the M-50 (Madrid ring road).
  • Exit 12A: Use the M-40 (Madrid ring road).

Priority bus lane introduced

The Ministry of Transport has introduced a priority bus lane for intercity buses to facilitate public transport. The lane, marked with yellow construction paint, begins at kilometre 17,800 and ends at the Cuatro Vientos modal interchange. From there, commuters can access the Metro or Cercanías for onward travel.

Real-time traffic updates

The Traffic Department will provide real-time updates on delays and detours via:

  • Variable message panels on the affected sections and surrounding areas.
  • Traffic information service on radio and television.
  • Social media: X (@InformaciónDGT and @DGTes).
  • Phone: Call 011.

Expect delays, plan ahead

Drivers are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance, considering the alternative routes or switching to public transport where possible. The construction works aim to improve traffic flow in the long term, but temporary disruptions are anticipated.
