On the lush island of Tenerife, amidst its rich and fertile lands, grows a tropical wonder: the jackfruit, or yaca, the largest fruit in the world. Originally from Indonesia and parts of Southeast Asia, this impressive fruit can weigh up to 50 kilograms.
Its thick, spiky exterior hides a treasure inside—a highly valued ingredient, particularly among those following vegan and vegetarian diets. When unripe, jackfruit boasts a fibrous texture that remarkably resembles shredded meat, making it an ideal substitute for plant-based meals.
A giant fruit that tastes like meat
The appeal of the jackfruit goes far beyond its size. When ripe, it offers a sweet flavour likened to a combination of pineapple, mango, and banana, making it perfect for desserts and fresh dishes. But it’s when green that the fruit’s true versatility shines. Its meat-like texture has gained popularity in vegan and vegetarian cuisine. There, it offers a healthy, satisfying alternative to meat-based dishes.
Nutritionally, jackfruit is a powerhouse. Rich in fibre, vitamin C, and potassium, it also stands out among tropical fruits for its protein content, enhancing its reputation as a nutritious alternative to meat. It’s low in fat and packed with antioxidants, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a balanced diet.
Tenerife’s tropical fruit bounty
Jackfruit is just one of many exotic fruits thriving in Tenerife’s ideal climate. The island’s fertile soil supports a variety of lesser-known tropical delights. Examples are lychees and guanábana and the intriguing Gin Berry and aboticaba, which grows directly from the tree trunk. Even the unique chocolate fruit, which offers a taste reminiscent of cacao, adds to the diversity of Tenerife’s culinary offerings.
These fruits are not only rich in flavour but also packed with health benefits. Increasingly, they are being featured in local restaurants. Chefs incorporate them into innovative dishes that highlight their distinct taste profiles.
A sustainable choice
Jackfruit and Tenerife’s other tropical fruits offer a responsible, locally sourced alternative to meat. By promoting these versatile fruits, Tenerife continues to surprise visitors with its unique blend of culinary delights and environmentally friendly options
