Andalucia’s famous Caminito del Rey is marking its tenth anniversary with the addition of Spain’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge. Officially announced on Friday, construction of the new structure began on 28 March, aiming for a November 2025 opening. Spanning 110 metres and suspended 50 metres above the dramatic El Chorro gorge, the bridge promises both improved safety and striking views.
Announcing the news, Caminito del Rey shared on X: “Construction begins on the new stretch of the Caminito del Rey, featuring Spain’s longest suspension bridge: 110 metres! Perfect for celebrating 10 years of adventures and incredible views. Ready to hike high?”
A historic journey from risk to attraction
Built in the early 1900s, Caminito del Rey was originally a practical route for workers maintaining two hydroelectric plants at El Chorro. In 1921, King Alfonso XIII walked the precarious path to inaugurate the nearby Conde del Guadalhorce dam, lending the trail its royal nickname. However, decades of neglect transformed it into one of the world’s most dangerous hikes, known for its perilous drops and crumbling walkways.
After extensive restoration in 2015, Caminito del Rey reopened, quickly becoming a major tourist attraction. Over three million visitors have since traversed the route, injecting around €400 million into the local economy.
Enhanced safety and accessibility
Safety concerns motivated the decision for the new bridge. Geological surveys identified potential instability near the existing exit. The new structure, constructed from steel, wood, and robust braided cables weighing 38 tonnes, provides a safer alternative. Helicopters will assist with its complex installation, further highlighting the ambitious nature of the project.
Community collaboration and economic growth
Francisco Salado, President of the Diputación de Málaga, emphasised the success of the project as an example of collaboration between local communities and public authorities. For nearby villages, Caminito del Rey represents both pride and substantial economic benefit, supporting local businesses and creating jobs.
Easier access and unforgettable views
Beyond improved safety, the suspension bridge removes the steep final descent previously faced by visitors. Although the original exit will still be available, many are likely to choose the new route, offering greater comfort and unforgettable panoramas.
Visitors planning to experience the Caminito del Rey are advised to book well in advance, particularly during peak tourist seasons. Tickets are available through the official Caminito del Rey website and reputable resellers.
