Petrol and diesel prices have fallen again in Spain over the past week. The price of gasoline fell by 0.43%. Diesel became 0.53% cheaper. As a result, the diesel price once again fell below €1.5 euros per litre. This is according to the data from the Oil Bulletin of the European Union (EU) published on Thursday.
According to the figures, collected from 11,400 petrol stations in Spain between 16 and 22 July, the average price of petrol was €1.617 per litre and the price of diesel was €1.492 per litre. Good news for motorists, just before the second big holiday exodus of the summer. With this decrease, the petrol price is back at the level of the week of 24 June, and the diesel price at that of 1 July.
Petrol price higher than at the beginning of the year
The price now paid for gasoline is 5.34% higher than at the beginning of the year, while the price of diesel has remained practically the same, falling by only 0.13%. Compared to a year ago, petrol has become only 0.12% more expensive, while diesel has become 1.84% more expensive.
Where a 55-litre tank of gasoline cost €88.82 a year ago, you now have to pay 11 cents more, namely €88.93. A year ago, those who fill up with diesel paid €80.57 to fill the same tank, €1.5 less than now (€82.06).
Fuel prices far from record highs
Petrol and diesel prices are still far from the peaks they reached in June 2022. Then Russia’s invasion of Ukraine pushed up fuel prices. Gasoline now costs 16.69% less than it did then, when it reached €1.941 per litre, even though the government applied a general discount of 20 cents per litre at the time. Diesel now has an average price that is 21.47% lower than the maximum it reached, €1.9 per litre, including the discount.
Prices in Spain below European average
In the past week, the price of these two motor fuels (Euro Super 95 petrol and diesel) was below the European average. The average petrol price in the EU was €1.736 per litre. Diesel cost an average of €1.614 per litre.
