The Guardia Civil, in collaboration with the A21 organisation, has introduced a new campaign aimed at raising awareness and protecting victims of human trafficking.
This campaign focuses on preventing human trafficking for forced labour, sexual exploitation, and other forms of exploitation.
Human trafficking: Key facts
Human trafficking involves the recruitment, transportation, and reception of victims. Moreover, traffickers use violence, intimidation, and vulnerability to exploit people, primarily for labour and sexual purposes.
In 2024, the Guardia Civil has carried out 106 operations related to human trafficking. Of these, 25 involved the transportation and recruitment of victims for sexual and labour exploitation, while 81 used violence and deception for exploitation. Consequently, these operations have led to the arrest of 205 individuals for sexual and labour exploitation crimes.
Rescue operations and victims
The efforts of the Guardia Civil this year have resulted in the rescue of 355 victims of trafficking. Among them, 25 were exploited for sexual purposes, and 103 for labour. In addition, 11 people were freed from sexual exploitation, while 216 were rescued from forced labour.
Raising awareness at airports
As part of the campaign, information monitors have been placed in baggage claim areas at Spain’s major airports. These displays feature simple, informative messages aimed at potential victims, explaining that anyone can fall prey to sexual or labour trafficking. A contact number is also provided for victims or anyone with knowledge of trafficking activities to report the situation.
A21’s role in combating trafficking
A21, a global organisation fighting human trafficking, actively collaborates with the Guardia Civil. Furthermore, they provide critical information that has led to various investigations and coordinate with other NGOs to assist victims. Their mission is to rescue and restore the rights of individuals subjected to trafficking.
Previous campaigns and initiatives
In 2019, the Guardia Civil and A21 launched the “Passport to Indicators of Trafficking” campaign, an informative brochure designed to help victims recognise signs of trafficking. In 2020, both organisations signed an operational protocol to reinforce efforts to protect vulnerable groups and enhance early detection of trafficking victims.
A21’s global mission
A21 operates in 12 countries with 14 offices worldwide, working to prevent human trafficking, rescue victims, and restore their rights. Furthermore, their approach includes awareness campaigns, collaboration with law enforcement, and legal support for survivors. They also offer housing, medical care, legal advice, education, employment assistance, and voluntary repatriation services.
