EU mandates high-speed rail connection for Málaga airport

The European Union now mandates airports with over 12 million passengers annually to have a high-speed rail link to city centres. Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, which saw over 22 million passengers in 2023, must implement this connection.

This new EU regulation seeks to enhance sustainability, innovation, and resilience in transportation. Smaller airports must also have connections via various low-emission transport options. Those with fewer than 4 million passengers are encouraged, but not required, to establish such links.

Implementation in Málaga

Currently, Málaga Airport is connected to María Zambrano station via Cercanías commuter trains. However, a direct high-speed rail line to the airport is now in the works, expected to be completed by 2050. Similar plans are in place for Madrid-Barajas Airport.

Alleviating pressure on the airport and city

These new high-speed rail plans could help reduce congestion at Málaga Airport and ease the load on María Zambrano station. Alhaurín de la Torre has proposed a major station near the airport, potentially addressing the rising number of travellers.

Impact on Costa del Sol rail development

The decision on the train service model, whether commuter or high-speed, will be influenced by this new requirement, impacting the overall rail network development along the Costa del Sol.

Record-breaking year for Málaga Airport

In 2023, Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport had its busiest year ever, handling over 22 million passengers, a 12.5% increase from 2019. Projections for 2024 suggest even higher numbers, with nearly 11.5 million passengers and 80,788 flights in the first half alone.
