Málaga airport records historic half-year with over 11 million passengers

Málaga Airport has experienced a record-breaking first half of the year, surpassing eleven million passengers for the first time. From January to June 2024, the airport handled nearly 11.5 million passengers across 80,788 flights, marking an increase of 1.5 million passengers compared to the same period in 2023.

Data from Aena, the Spanish airport management company, highlights a 14.1% increase in passenger volume and a nearly 10% rise in flights year-on-year. Both domestic and international markets contributed to this growth, with domestic traffic rising by almost 7% and international traffic by about 19%. Out of 80,788 flights, 61,744 were international, reflecting a 13% increase.

Record-breaking June

June was particularly noteworthy, recording the highest number of passengers in the history of Málaga airport. The airport handled 2,433,242 passengers, an 11.6% increase from June 2023. This was facilitated by 16,677 flights, up 8% from the previous year. This surpasses the previous record of 2,179,575 passengers and 15,447 flights set in June 2023.

Increased daily traffic at Málaga airport

In May, the airport averaged 516 flights and 76,000 passengers daily. These figures rose in June to 555 flights and 81,000 passengers per day.

Expanding international connections

The surge in traffic has led to a new record in international connections. In June, Málaga Airport had direct flights to 154 destinations worldwide, compared to 151 in July of the previous year. This expansion, facilitated by 65 airlines, includes more non-stop connections to cities across Europe, the Middle East, and North America.

Aena remains optimistic about the future, focusing on further growth and infrastructure improvements to meet increasing demand. The continuous growth and expanding international links cement Málaga Airport’s status as a major hub in the region.
