Málaga Airport experienced a record-breaking year in 2024, handling 24,923,774 passengers—an increase of 11.5% compared to the previous year.
Flight operations also rose significantly, with 174,915 takeoffs and landings, up by 8.2%. On average, the airport managed 68,284 passengers and 479 flights daily.
Strong demand for commercial flights
Most travellers in 2024 used commercial flights, with a total of 24,871,545 passengers. Of these, 4,234,592 traveled on domestic routes, marking a 5.2% rise from 2023, while 20,636,953 flew internationally, a 13% increase.
Leading international markets
The UK remained Málaga Airport’s largest international market, with 5,691,371 passengers. Germany followed with 1,967,294 passengers, while the Netherlands (1,479,693), France (1,360,672), and Italy (1,289,204) were also key markets. The most significant growth came from the Czech Republic and Poland, with passenger numbers rising by 82.4% and 56.4%, respectively.
Record operations and baggage handling
The airport recorded 171,952 commercial flights in 2024, including 36,886 domestic operations (up 4.7%) and 135,066 international flights (up 10.5%).
Málaga also set a new record for baggage handling, processing nearly 6 million pieces (5,998,006)—an increase from the 2023 record of 5,521,041 pieces.
December 2024 highlights
In December alone, Málaga Airport handled 1,573,958 passengers, a 7.4% increase compared to December 2023. Domestic passengers totaled 313,884 (up 1.9%), while 1,257,392 travelled internationally (up 9.1%). The UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and France were the top markets for international travellers during the month.
The airport also registered 11,922 flight movements in December, up 5.4% year-on-year.
Performance across Aena airports
Málaga’s record performance aligns with strong results from the Aena group, which manages 46 airports and two heliports in Spain, London-Luton Airport, and 17 airports in Brazil. In 2024, Aena handled 369,444,029 passengers across its network, an 8.5% increase from 2023. Aircraft movements rose by 7.1% to 3,203,747, while cargo transport surged by 18.1%, reaching 1,421,640 tonnes.
In December 2024, Aena airports saw 26,925,911 passengers (up 7.2%), 239,377 flight movements (up 5.7%), and 124,571 tonnes of cargo (up 11.5%).
Future investments in infrastructure
To meet growing demand, Aena is planning future infrastructure investments under its Airport Regulation Document (DORA) for 2027-2031. These investments aim to ensure that airport facilities are adequately prepared to handle increased traffic and improve overall passenger experience. Once approved, these projects will be incorporated into Aena’s strategic development plan.
Málaga Airport’s record-breaking year underscores its importance as a key gateway for domestic and international travel, reinforcing its role in Spain’s aviation network.
