MADRID – The Spanish Official Gazette (Boletín Oficial del Estado, BOE) has announced an update on the sale prices of specific tobacco brands. Important information for smokers in Spain.
The resolution of October 13, 2023, issued by the presidency of the Tobacco Market Commission, reflects the new tobacco prices in accordance with Law 13/1998. The brands mentioned in the Official Gazette must adjust their prices from October 20 in all tobacco shops, both on the mainland and in the Balearic Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla.
It’s worth noting that some packs of cigarettes now cost €7.30, as is the case with the brand Mare Nostrum “El Viejo Continente”. In addition, certain pipe tobacco brands, like Mcconnell Black Parrot Special Cut (100 g), are priced at €26.00 per unit.
‘Estancos,’ the Spanish tobacco shops
In Spain, special tobacco shops, ‘estancos,’ have the exclusive right to sell tobacco products. These shops also sell other regulated goods, such as stamps, bus and lottery tickets. Estancos are often run as family businesses and are a significant part of Spanish retail culture. They can be recognised by their burgundy-red façade with the word ‘Tabacos’ in large, yellow letters and the exclusive concession number under which they operate.
‘Estancos’ are obliged to check the age of buyers. Only people aged 18 and older can buy tobacco products.
