As Spain prepares to close 2024 and ring in 2025, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has announced a second phase of its special Christmas traffic operation.

This phase began Friday, December 27, at 3.00 pm and will run until 11.59 pm on Wednesday, January 1. Moreover, it aims to ensure road safety during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Millions of long-distance Spanish road journeys

The DGT estimates 6.42 million long-distance trips will be made by road during this period. This figure builds on the travel already undertaken earlier in the festive season as people journey to second homes, winter sports destinations, tourist hotspots, and shopping areas.

The busiest travel times are expected to coincide with peak hours, making careful planning essential. The DGT highlights the following as the most unfavourable times to travel:

  • Friday, December 27: Between 6.00 pm and 9.00 pm.
  • Saturday, December 28: Between 10.00 am and 1.00 pm.
  • Sunday, December 29: Between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm.

Traffic management measures

To manage the high volume of traffic safely and efficiently, the DGT has implemented several measures, including:

  • Reversible and additional lanes: Specially marked lanes using cones and signage during peak hours.
  • Suspension of roadworks: Major construction activities will be paused to reduce disruptions.
  • Restricted events: Sporting and other events occupying roadways will be limited.
  • Truck restrictions: Specific limitations on trucks, particularly those carrying certain goods, on busy routes and at critical times.

These measures are supported by traffic management centres, Guardia Civil traffic agents, road maintenance teams, and emergency services, including medical responders and firefighters. Full details of the operation can be found in the DGT’s “Operaciones Especiales” section.

DGT safety campaign calls for responsibility

The DGT’s Christmas campaign slogan, Drive as if you were carrying the main dish for Christmas dinner, emphasises the importance of cautious and responsible driving. Tragically, since the holiday period began on December 20, 28 lives have been lost on Spanish roads.

To prevent further tragedies, the DGT has reiterated essential safety advice for drivers:

  1. Avoid driving under the influence: Do not drive after consuming alcohol or drugs and do not allow others to do so.
  2. Exercise caution on short or night journeys: Familiarity with the route does not guarantee safety.
  3. Be winter-ready: Check weather conditions and carry necessary items such as snow chains or blankets when adverse conditions are forecast.
  4. Plan your journey: Check for road updates through the DGT website, Twitter accounts (@DGTes and @InformacionDGT), radio and TV traffic bulletins, or by calling 011.

As millions take to the roads over the coming days, the DGT reminds drivers to prioritise safety, responsibility, and planning.
