A well-organised gang has managed to steal at least twenty rental cars at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport, leaving dozens of unsuspecting tourists out of pocket. Authorities have launched an investigation and made initial arrests. But tourists in Spain, be aware when returning rental vehicles!
Tourists returning their rental cars at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport thought they were following standard procedures. They handed over their keys to apparent employees of the rental company. These wore high-visibility vests and provided verbal confirmation that their security deposit would be refunded. Some were even told to expect a confirmation email.
However, that email never arrived, and the deposit refunds never came through. Instead, the rental companies were left wondering why several vehicles had not been returned.
A sophisticated scheme
The scam was simple yet highly effective. The criminals posed as rental company employees, complete with uniforms and official-looking attire. Their professional appearance and calm demeanor led tourists to believe they were handing their cars back to legitimate staff.
Only when rental companies contacted customers about missing vehicles did the extent of the fraud become clear. With at least twenty cars stolen, the operation was highly organised and well-coordinated.
Authorities take action
Once tourists and rental companies raised concerns, Spanish authorities launched an investigation. Surveillance footage from the airport confirmed the tourists’ accounts, showing the fake employees driving off with the rental cars.
So far, two suspects have been arrested, and several stolen vehicles have been recovered. Some of the recovered cars are believed to have been used in criminal activities. Authorities suspect more individuals are involved and anticipate further arrests as the investigation continues.
How to avoid rental car scams
Travellers can take precautions to avoid falling victim to similar scams:
- Always return rental cars inside official parking areas – never hand your keys over to individuals outside designated drop-off points.
- Verify employee credentials – rental staff should have official identification and paperwork matching the rental company.
- Check for confirmation in real time – ensure the rental company records the return in their system while you are present.
- Be cautious of anyone approaching you first – if someone asks for your keys before you reach the designated drop-off desk, verify their identity before proceeding.
